The Role of the Project Manager
A lot of organizations
understand how important it is to organize, plan and put up strategy to ensure
that the regular activity of the company is carried out effectively. However
from time to time projects are needed to produce some changes within the usual
activities around the company. Many company executives understand that
projects need to be managed effectively however it is not enough to know that,
what is more is that a project manager should be given the responsibility of
ensuring that projects are executed with utmost care in order to yield the
relevant reward. Also be aware that if a project does not produce its benefits
(short term or long term) it could be considered to have not succeeded.
Success by Coincidence
Most organizations often
underestimate the role of a projects manager when projects are involved. They
necessarily do not say that in explicit terms but it’s often implied by the
attitude of the major stakeholders of the organization when it comes to project
handling. Often times when there is a new project, the executives simply attach
the task to a department and saddle someone in that department at times the
head of that department to take responsibility of the success of the
project.
Defining the causes of
Projects Failure
Most times the projects
are successful depending on the nature of the project. Usually for less complex
activities, it’s easier to manage; however a more proper record and
accountability strategy can be in place for future reference on projects
handled. In the cases where the projects succeed, usually it is not taken
into account the process involved that led to the outcome. That is why future
projects assigned to that same department or the same group of persons does not
usually produce needed results particularly when the new projects are similar
to the previous ones. At such situations, it’s easier to point accusing fingers
at persons or circumstances that led to the failure of the project.
The Measurable Project
Success
The real issue could be that the first project
succeeded by coincidence. That is bad enough to know that most organizations
run projects on the basis of coincidence without knowing that it is what they
are actually doing. A project management unit is very critical to the success
of projects in organizations so that there can be detailed documentation of the
process of project execution to avoid recurring issues of project uncertainty
of success or failure. Using project management methodology ensures that there
is detailed account and record of project progression for future reference as
may be needed
